Mr. Foxman, whose group fights anti-Semitism, is not easy to impress. On a windowsill of his office on Third Avenue he has a collection of wooden dolls, which he bought in Poland last October, that portray Jewish businessmen counting piles of coins.

Whoa! Not only is Samantha gone, but the new doll almost overlaps her (Samantha was 1904; Rebecca is 1914). I knew they were retiring Samantha, but it didn’t hit home till I saw the NYTimes article with full lineup of dolls, and Samantha is gone. It’s a little sad, but on the other hand, I’ve got Samantha and her trunk, bedset, and several outfits in excellent condition. ka-ching.
(Also, weirdly, I always sort of assumed Samantha was Jewish. I think my family did too—one year they bought me a Hanukkah outfit for Samantha, even though she’s a period doll.)
