So too it’ll be with computers. Eventually, most will be like the iPad in terms of the degree to which the underlying computer is abstracted away. Manual computers, like the Mac and Windows PCs, will slowly shift from the standard to the niche, something of interest only to experts and enthusiasts and developers.

Windows has certainly been heading down the “automatic” direction for years—on Vista, I can’t even tell where downloaded files live (much less my non-techy coworkers). Programmers, and future programmers, will always find the command line, and if it’s not available they’ll hack the computer to find the command line. Most users will never know the command line exists.
